Working Principle
Chain welding machines are typically designed for flash butt welding of metal chain links.The basic principle is resistance butt welding:
Two ends of a chain link or steel wire are clamped tightly and pressed together
A high current, low voltage is passed through the contact area
High contact resistance generates intense heat, melting the surface rapidly
Under set forging pressure, the molten metal is extruded (forming flash)
The joint solidifies under pressure, forming a dense, high-strength weld
The entire process includes:Clamping → Preheating → Flash → Upsetting → Cooling → Releaseto complete one chain link welding.
Main Components
1. Welding Frame & Body
Heavy-duty rigid structure to resist upsetting force
Ensures stability during high-pressure welding
Prevents deformation that causes poor welding quality
2. Clamping Mechanism
Fixed clamp and moving clamp
Holds chain ends firmly during welding
Ensures concentric alignment and stable pressure
Usually driven by hydraulic or pneumatic system
3. Hydraulic / Pneumatic System
Provides upsetting pressure and clamping force
Controls moving speed during flash and upsetting
Ensures stable, adjustable pressure for consistent welds
4. Welding Transformer
Step-down transformer: high current, low voltage output
Converts mains power into welding power
Supports stepless adjustment of welding current
5. Control System
PLC + touch screen or relay control
Sets welding parameters: current, time, pressure, speed
Automatically completes the whole welding cycle
Includes fault detection and safety interlocks
6. Electrode / Clamp Jaws
Directly contact the workpiece
Made of wear-resistant, conductive copper alloy
Transmit current and transfer upsetting force
7. Feeding & Bending Mechanism (on automatic models)
Automatically feeds steel wire or chain
Bends material into chain-link shape
Transports links to welding station
8. Flash Removal & Cleaning Structure
Trims or cuts welding flash
Improves surface finish and chain appearance
9. Cooling System
Cools welding transformer, electrodes and clamps
Prevents overheating during continuous production
Extends service life of electrical parts
10. Safety Protection Devices
Emergency stop button
